Out of all of the beaches we visited on the big island, this one was my favorite! The snorkeling is in the top ten places I have ever snorkeled. I saw sea snakes, thousands of fish, healthy coral reefs, sea turtles, hundreds of sea urchins (red and black), and there were even cleaning fish near the shore (you know, the exfoliating skin kind that nibble on your skin to eat the dead skin, it really tickles and is so fun). The lagoon is safe for little kids and has a sandy bottom. The beach is small, but has the same powder sugar sand found in the Bahamas. The reef is hundreds of yards long and is so close to the surface of the water, that you have to really be careful and not bump into it. There are pockets of water that is easily as hot as a hot tub in the reef area just outside of the little lagoon (100 feet from the shore). We loved the little arch in the rocks, just off the shore. This is a snorkeling fantasy land. Better than Captian Cooks just an hour or so away. The only issue is the parking and the short walk to the beach. They only allow a few cars in at a time so you either need to get there early, or wait for your turn. The gated community is very strict about the parking. The bathrooms are big and clean. This beach also has some shade, making it the perfect spot.
