Newdicks Beach

This beach is decent for swimming and has some rocks that kids might find interesting, but it doesn't offer much more than the nearby free-access beaches. We did spot an eagle ray in knee-deep water, which was a nice surprise. The entry fee is $5 per adult, while children can enter for free, making it a reasonably priced option for a quieter place to park and swim. Note that the gates are locked from 6pm to 6am during the summer months. The beach is very shallow, so it's not the best spot for surfcasting.

A long gravel drive leads from the pavement to the grassy parking lot, which is typically not very crowded. The beach itself is generally wide and sandy, with a few boulders in the water that add some interest. On the north side, there are numerous tide pools where you and the kids can explore and find crabs, snails, fish, and more. Keep in mind, it's quite wild, which adds to its beauty. However, this also means there are no lifeguards or facilities.

The beach itself is fantastic and perfect for families, but it's questionable that the owners of the access point are imposing rules on a public space. However, it was refreshing to see that the beachgoers didn't pay much attention to these rules and did what they wanted anyway. So, if you can discreetly ignore the restrictions and get away with it, you'll have a wonderful day.

This beach is stunning, featuring a long stretch of wide, soft sand perfect for swimming and surfing. It closes daily at 6 PM (5 PM during winter months) and requires a $5 fee per vehicle for entry via a privately maintained driveway. The small fee is absolutely worth it! If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you can use the access ramp at the parking lot to drive along the beach. However, be cautious—without a good 4-wheel drive, you might get stuck in the loose sand. The northern part of the beach boasts amazing cliffs and a scenic rocky shoreline. It's never crowded, though the parking lot can fill up on weekends or holidays. This is definitely one of our favorite beaches in New Zealand! Plan to spend several hours enjoying it!
