“Isn’t it beautiful? Sometimes if you don’t get out of the car, you don’t know,” a lady I met at Pambula Beach mused. I actually came to swim at Pambula River mouth but an intriguing rocky outcrop where the ocean meets the mouth of the Pambula River enticed me further along.
I’m no geologist but what is just around the corner, the southernmost end of Pambula Beach, is pretty spectacular. Red rocks, brown rocks, orange rocks, rocks covered with soft lime green weed. They make channels in the beach creating private rock pool bathing areas, so it felt wrong not to indulge. Some of the rocks felt like unintentional art pieces, others more ominously had teeth: curious veins of grey and white quartz shaped into yellowing teeth. The whole area is teaming with life from mussels to oysters to crabs everywhere you look. Really glad I took a walk and had a beach swim in my own private rock canyon.
Parking is available at the river mouth where there is also a cool bench that disappears into the rock wall. It’s the start of a walking path that heads down the Pambula River.
